About the eeyou istchee james bay region
The eyyou istchee region goes from the 49th parallels to the 55th parallels. It holds countless rivers, wildlife reserves and has a diverse wildlife. But, what I love most about this vast northern region is the people who lives in it.
Cree communities live in the baie-james region and they will gladly share their culture with you. Everything that they do is in deep respect with the nature and the people’s land. Their traditional activities range form fishing activities to intricate beadwork.

Therefore, a great way to experience northern Québec and to learn about the Cree way of life is to venture north, try unique outdoor activities and immerse yourself in the indigenous culture.
Things you should not miss in Eeyou istchee
Visit LG-2 hydroelectric power station
I know how it might sound…..A little bit boring (or a lot actually). But, trust me it is one that you will never forget. You have two options to enjoy this activity.
The first one is to drive on the Robert-Bourassa spillway. But, you have to know that people work there. So, you’ll have to check out the public opening hours. Hence, there is a schedule located at both ends of the spillway. If I remember correctly, you can go before 8h AM, between 12h and 1h PM and after 5h PM.
In my opinion, only this drive was worth the trip. You’ll get a completely amazing view of the landscape and bear witness to the hard work of countless people who made one of the two hydroelectric projects alive.

Next, you can get an other fantastic view by going to the Robert-Bourassa lookout. Then, you will see what they call the Giant’s staircase. Since the dam as an impressive capacity, it was necessary to carved the big rock in a design that could release all the excess of water safely and without flooding the surrounding.

I highly suggest that you do both, if you have the time. They both have an impressive view and are worth every seconds you spend there.
As for LG1, if you ask me…If you are going that way, fine go visit. If not, don’t do the detour for this one. It’s impressive and you can also do a guided tour, if that interest you. But, if you only want to enjoy the view, as I did, it was not as nice as LG2 and I spent max 30 minutes there.

Watch the northern light at James bay
This activity is one for the books. I assure you that you will experience all the beauty of Nordic life with this brilliant show. Although, you will need to have a couples of days on hand, as they can be a bit unpredictable.
But, if you manage to have at least 3 days in the region, I’m confident that you’ll be able to witness this amazing phenomenon. I suggest than you camp near the rest area in Chisasibi. This way, you will sleep right by James Bay. Then, you’ll get to have an wonderful view of the bay and have the perfect spot for the sunset too.

Also, I made this post, here, if you want some useful tips for an unforgettable adventure.
Go on a fishing trip in Eeyou istchee
If you’re into fishing, there is a great outfitting right on the Billy-Diamond highway, the Pourvoirie aventure lac Goéland. As you go to LG-2, for example, you’re bond to pass right by. Might as well try it, even for a day!! You can fish pike and walleye fish. Also, you can rent a cottage and a boat. They have package available for three days of rent and more, but it is also possible to rent only for a day or two.

Go to a pow wow festival
It’s a way for the Cree communities to honor their heritage and gather all together in celebration. The dancers will show off all of their moves by the beats of the drums, while wearing their colorful regalia.
It is open to everyone, as long as you are respectful of their traditions. You can attend this festival in Chisasibi, Mistissini, Eastmain and Wemindji. So, if you want to learn more about the Cree culture, this is definitely the best way to do it. You’ll have to possibility to exchange and learn from an amazing community.
